It’s Not “Just Period Pain” - Understanding Endometriosis

It’s Not “Just Period Pain” - Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed conditions. Many people are told their symptoms are “normal”, which can delay getting the support and care they need.

As pharmacists, we regularly speak to women experiencing ongoing pain, fatigue and cycle-related issues. Understanding the signs of endometriosis is the first step in taking control of your health.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and other areas within the pelvis.

Over time, this can lead to inflammation, scarring and significant discomfort.

Common symptoms of endometriosis

Symptoms can vary from person to person, but some of the most common include:

  • Painful or heavy periods
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Bloating (often referred to as “endo belly”)
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

It’s important to note that symptoms don’t always reflect the severity of the condition. Some people may have severe symptoms, while others may have very few.

Why diagnosis can take time

On average, it can take several years to receive a diagnosis. This is often because symptoms are mistaken for other conditions or dismissed as typical menstrual pain.

There is no single blood test for endometriosis. While scans can sometimes help, diagnosis often involves further investigation by a specialist.

When should you seek advice?

If your symptoms are affecting your daily life, work, sleep or overall wellbeing, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional.

You should consider seeking advice if:

  • Your period pain stops you from carrying out normal activities
  • You regularly miss work or social plans due to symptoms
  • Pain is not relieved by over-the-counter options
  • You experience ongoing pelvic pain outside of your cycle
