Skin SOS: Dealing With Common Summer Skin Woes
While we all look forward to a bit of summer sun, the warmer weather often brings some unwanted skin troubles along for the ride. Whether you're abroad or enjoying a heatwave at home, here's how to deal with the most common skin challenges of the season.
1. Sunburn vs Heat Rash – Know the Difference
Sunburn is caused by overexposure to UV rays, while heat rash is due to blocked sweat glands. Sunburn leaves skin red, sore, and warm to the touch. Heat rash tends to appear as small red bumps or blisters, usually in folds of skin or areas where sweat builds up.
Tip: Avoid sun exposure during peak hours, wear loose, breathable clothing, and stay in the shade when possible.
2. Soothe Itchy, Irritated or Peeling Skin
If your skin is already suffering, don’t panic. Apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation, keep the area moisturised with fragrance-free lotion, and resist the urge to scratch or peel. Hydration from the inside out also helps!
3. Prevent Clogged Pores in Humid Weather
Hot, sticky days can make breakouts worse, especially if you’re wearing SPF or makeup. Try to cleanse morning and night, avoid heavy creams during the day, and choose non-comedogenic products where possible. A gentle exfoliation once or twice a week can help keep skin clear.
4. After-Sun Care Is a Must
Even if you don’t get burned, your skin needs TLC after long sun exposure. Use cooling gels or lotions with aloe vera or hyaluronic acid to replenish lost moisture. After-sun routines can help your skin recover and maintain its glow.
5. Don’t Forget Your Feet
Sandals and flip-flops might feel great, but they can leave your feet dry, cracked, and sore. Keep them clean and moisturised, and give them a gentle scrub now and then. If you’re walking more on holidays, consider blister patches and supportive sandals.
With just a few tweaks to your routine, you can keep your skin happy and healthy all summer long — and spend less time scratching, peeling or stressing over flare-ups.
